The "Quiet" Prize

The “Quiet” Prize

HelMu awards the Quiet Prize, established in 2007, to high-quality shops, restaurants or other forms of service that refrain from subjecting clients to background music. This award is intended both to promote the performance of live music, and to prevent music from becoming an irritating part of insignificant and evermore present background noise.

The award does not categorically oppose background music but seeks to encourage service providers to reconsider the use of background music and to be encouraged to consider background music as not providing any competitive business advantage.

The prize will be awarded at the discretion of HelMu. It includes both a framed certificate of honor and one free advertisement in "Muusikko" magazine.

Suggestions and tips on possible future awardees are welcome!

The first Quiet Award was given in 2007

The first Quiet Prize was awarded to St Urho’s Pub, more commonly known as "Urkki". The award and the accompanying certificate of honor were presented on Friday, March 2, 2007.

The pub’s soundscape lacks both background music as well as slot machine sounds. In addition to its lack of background music, it has also become popular with musicians due to its location being favorably situated in Helsinki. It serves a varied selection of beers, has a late night kitchen as well as a professional, friendly staff.
